Achievement

I started thinking recently about what it is I want from life; what do I want to achieve? Is it still worth it trying to achieve my goals or do I need new ones? So I did the terrible thing of looking on Instagram for work ideas and, with all good intentions,  ended up looking at some friends profiles and started feeling bad again. I suddenly felt a rush of anxiety and went into a spiral of negativity about myself and my abilities.  I felt this because I felt that they had achieved more than me and that I was not achieving anything.

Then, I started remembering all the positive things I had achieved already, the things I had overcome.  Surely they were worth something? Comparing can only lead to negative thinking.  I got rid of Instagram and Facebook because it left me feeling like I was not as good as everyone else. This had been deeply ingrained in me already, but the social media sites just added more fuel to the fire.

After a while I had to look at doing what I needed to do in order to stop feeling worthless. When we stoop so low we can use it as motivation for change because we are tired of feeling this way. Find the trigger and then work on it. The social media sites were big triggers so I stopped them. I found motivation in writing down things I’m grateful for and what went well in the day. I find it positive to celebrate small achievements. This can help us make progress for those big achievements. We do not have to be amazing at everything. I’ve found myself doing a little something each day to help myself feel motivated. Whether it’s searching for ideas or reading positive articles.

I’m not saying we should avoid social media. Use it if it’s something that brings you positivity. I just find it is not my world anymore.

It can be competitive in today’s world and there can be a lot of pressure. What I found helpful was thinking about what I enjoy doing; not what everyone else does. If you enjoy something then you’ll enjoy working at it.

Remember, achievements come in many forms. You can achieve what you put your mind to. Don’t forget all the things you have already achieved.
